Scholars brochureWelcome to Feed Our Scholars a community project whose  goal is to generate funds to provide weekend nutritious meals to children attending Wiscasset schools who are living with food insecurities.

Many children rely on school cafeterias for their most nutritious meal of the day. In some cases, this may be the only meal a child receives.  Each Friday afternoon during the school year, kids are discreetly and confidentially provided a food filled backpack to ensure they have something to eat during the weekend.

In 2013 we provided weekend backpacks of food to 40 children in the Wiscasset School System. This number has fluctuated in subsequent years depending on need. Currently we are providing weekend food to 40 elementary and preschool children.  To continue to serve this number of students we need to raise $18,000 yearly through fundraising efforts, child sponsorships, grant writing, and generous donations from individuals and businesses.

Set For Success 2020 Update!

Backpack food programs have been shown to increase attendance, decrease behavior problems, improve concentration, and improves student academic achievement.

A parent recently commented on the program:

“The Backpack Program is a true blessing!  We are two parents who are experiencing an array of illnesses and loss of work. This help allows us to worry a little less about an essential part of our lives – meals.”

Books for Scholars 2018

At the end of the 2018 school year Friends of Wiscasset Library paired with FOS to provide Wiscasset Elementary children who participate in the Backpack Program new books to read over the summer. With the help of School Nurse Lynn who collected the scholars book requests, and funding from ‘Friends’, we purchased 30 books, both fiction and non-fiction. About half these books were specifically requested by the scholars, the rest were selected based upon book reviews and grade levels of the students. The books ranged from popular board books like Itsy Bitsy Spider for a Kindergarten student, to Paper Things for ages 10+, and a signed copy of Tiger, the Monarch Butterfly by local writer Tony Viehmann for a First-grader with an interest in butterflies. Each book was tied with a ribbon, and included a special note with a Friends of Wiscasset Library bookplate.
We plan to duplicate this effort in December 2018 so that the scholars will have good books to read over the holidays and on snow days.
